Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

Previous editions: Haas 1970: 310-11.

In this fragment an interesting cluster of gods is treated, including the Storm god of Kaštama in §3 and Zaḫpuna with Tazzuwaši (known elsewhere as Zuwaši), and possibly Kantiputti, in §5. They are originally Hattian deities typical of the northern districts, especially of Kaštama, a town which likely represent the geographical setting of this inventory (kindly pointed out by A. Kryszeń). Particularly interesting is the pairing of Zaḫpuna and Tazzuwaši, known from sources of the Imperial period as the spouse and the concubine (šašant-) of mount Zaliyanu respectively. It has been proposed that (Taz)zuwaši may have originally been the spouse of mount Zaliyanu in Tanipiya, being “downgraded” to a concubine after Zaliyanu was coupled with Zaḫpuna, goddess of Kaštama (Haas 1970: 79-87, Taracha 2009: 44, Wilhelm 2017: 191). Both Zaḫpuna and Tazzuwaši may originally represent divinized springs (Hoffner 2007: 124 with fn. 20, recalling the resemblance of the name Tazzuwaši to that of the divine spring Tauttawazi attested in KUB 38.6+). For Kantipu(i)tti, see commentary on KUB 38.14 i 7-8.

14′: The restoration is tentative, since this spelling of Kantipu(i)tti is not attested elsewhere.
